You’ve probably heard the saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (my sweet aunt swears she came up with her own version of this!). However, just like any journey, sustainable weight loss starts with that first step—and in this case it is movement aka exercise. But don’t stress—exercise doesn’t mean you need to hit the gym unless that’s what excites you. For some of us, what happens when we think exercise - another have-to?, dread?, misery? I know if I feel that way about something it is absolutely the last thing I want to do or that I am going to do. That's why I like to say joyful movement rather than exercise. This way we can focus more on the joy and that is really what matters most is that we find a sense of joy in whatever activity we choose.
So, Why Does Movement Matter?
Most of us probably know that it helps boost metabolism, burns calories, and keeps our muscles strong—all crucial for losing weight and keeping it off. But here's the real magic: it also lifts our mood, reduces stress, and boosts our mental well-being. These benefits are often what keeps us motivated, feeling great - empowered and strong - and moving forward on our weight loss journey.
So, What’s the Best Exercise for Weight Loss?
I get this question all the time. Honestly, walking is one of the easiest ways to get started, especially if regular movement isn’t already part of your routine. It might feel like a bit of a chore at first, but trust me—there’s joy in it; we just need to take the time to discover it for ourselves. Focusing on the joy means we don't have to dread it. No one wants to slog through a workout that feels like torture every day. But when you find an activity that brings you joy—whether it’s walking, going to the gym, or dancing around around your living room - it becomes a part of your life that you actually look forward to.
So back to the question....what's the best exercise? It’s the one you’ll actually do! Whether it’s a brisk walk, a gym session, or a dance party, the goal is to get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes, five days a week. And remember, you’ve got to walk before you can run—another gem from my wise aunt!
